Cupping

What Is Cupping?

Cupping is an ancient therapy used in China and the Middle East for 2,000 years. A noninvasive procedure that is often coupled with acupuncture. A type of traditional Chinese medicine, cupping therapy involves creating a vacuum within glass cups placed on certain acupuncture points on the skin. This can be done by heating the air within the cup before placing it on the skin. The cup may be left in place for several minutes and then removed, leaving behind a bright red, circular welt. Proponents believe that cupping therapy can help increase circulation and promote healing. The procedure is generally safe when performed by trained professionals. Long used in traditional Chinese medicine and other ancient healing systems, cupping has gained considerable popularity in recent years among athletes. Cupping is often recommended as a complementary therapy for migraine, pain management, sports injuries.

Moxibustion

What Is Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called “moxa” are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. Moxa is usually made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris), but it can be made of other substances as well. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences. The heat generated during moxibustion helps increase the flow of vital energy. In Traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion is used on people who have a cold or stagnant condition. The burning of moxa is believed to expel cold and warm the meridians, which leads to a smoother flow of blood and qi.
